Always curious what people here think about this.

Real answers from people here are usually more useful than search results.

Any caveats or things to watch out for would be just as useful as a straight recommendation.

Curious how others are approaching it

I read every reply. Even the bad ones.

A simple one that keeps coming up is rice, beans, and whatever veg is on offer that week. Sounds basic, but with a bit of seasoning it is actually solid and very cheap.

The trick is not treating it like a "budget meal" but building some flavor into it.

Garlic, spices, maybe a sauce, suddenly it feels like real food instead of a fallback :)
Football is life. Everything else is just details.

One thing that helped was leaning into batch cooking. Make one decent base meal and stretch it over a few days instead of cooking from scratch every time.

Things like pasta sauces, stews, and curries hold up well and often taste better the next day.

Saves money and effort at the same time

There is always a bit of skepticism with "cheap meal" ideas because some of them are cheap for a reason.

Either low nutrition or just not that enjoyable.

The better approach seems to be simple meals done well rather than cutting corners too far :-\

Egg-based meals are hard to beat. Omelettes, fried rice with eggs, or even just eggs on toast with something added.

Cheap, quick, and surprisingly flexible.

Feels like one of those staples that never really fails

A slightly different angle is looking at what is discounted rather than sticking to fixed recipes.

Build meals around what is cheap that week instead of forcing specific ingredients.

It takes a bit more planning but can save quite a bit over time 8)
