According to reporting from The Ankler, the actual reason behind the reversal comes down to viewership specifically falling short of what Disney had hoped for, despite a reasonably strong opening week of 618 million minutes viewed according to Nielsen. The show also skewed notably older than most top performing streaming titles, with 41 percent of its viewership concentrated in the 35 to 49 age range, a demographic pattern that apparently didn't line up with what Disney was targeting for a series meant to help expand the Marvel Cinematic Universe's audience going forward.

Showrunner Andrew Guest addressed the cancellation directly, clarifying that internal shifts at Disney and Marvel drove the decision rather than any scheduling conflict, and stating clearly that the reversal wasn't some kind of marketing stunt despite how it looked given the timing.
