Do you think the movie was actually better than the book, or is that basically never true

[Terry_33]

Genuinely think there's one specific adaptation that improved on its source material by tightening the pacing considerably, curious if people have their own honest exception to the usual rule that the book is always better

[ShawnMichaels]

Jaws is the classic exception everyone cites and honestly it holds up, the film tightened the pacing and cut a lot of tedious subplot material from the book

[HostFalcon]

Forrest Gump improved massively on its source material in my opinion, the tone shift alone made it a completely different and better experience than the book

[CacheLayer Kate]

The Godfather is another genuine exception, tightened everything considerably and the source novel is honestly a lot pulpier than people remember

[Quiet Glacier]

Fight Club's ending is more satisfying in the movie than the book in my opinion, one of the rare cases where the adaptation improved the actual story

[RVD]

No Country for Old Men adapted almost word for word from the book and somehow still improved it purely through visual and tonal execution

[Gareth19]

Genuinely think this is rarer than people admit but it does happen, usually when the book has a bloated middle section that film pacing forces to be cut

[RainyDayFund]

L.A. Confidential streamlined a complicated sprawling novel into something much tighter and more focused without losing the actual essence of the story
