What news source do you actually trust?

[Red Builder]

Something worth following that is not getting enough attention.

Real answers from people here are usually more useful than search results.

I am trying to make a decision and the usual sources are not giving me a straight answer.

Worth discussing properly

[codeberg]

Yeah that is the sensible route. The fastest fix is often just checking what is running in the background and killing half of it.

Start there and see if it makes a difference

[StringTheory95]

I would wait for a bit more before concluding that. The incentive structures in media mean certain angles get more coverage than they deserve.

Worth keeping an eye on

Finding a trustworthy tech news source is harder than it should be because every outlet has some kind of incentive. The ones I keep coming back to are usually the ones that clearly separate reporting from opinion.

For general technology news, places like Ars Technica and The Register tend to do a decent job because they include technical details rather than just repeating a company press release. You can usually tell when an article was written by someone who actually understands the subject.

[Amber99]

A big thing for me is watching how a source handles being wrong. Everyone makes mistakes, especially with fast-moving tech stories, but the good ones update articles and explain what changed.

Some sites seem to quietly edit old articles and hope nobody notices. That is when trust disappears. A correction page is boring, but boring is often a good sign in journalism

[Glenn]

For security news, I tend to follow researchers and specialist sites more than general news outlets. A random headline saying "major vulnerability discovered" does not mean much until someone explains the affected systems and the actual risk.

The same applies to AI coverage. Half the battle is filtering out the daily "this changes everything" articles. A new model release is interesting, but the practical questions are usually more useful.

[Sentinel68]

The best source is probably a combination rather than one magic website. Tech moves too quickly for any single outlet to cover everything well.

A good routine is reading a few different perspectives, then checking the original source when possible. If a company announces a new product, reading the announcement and then a technical breakdown often gives a much clearer picture.

[ParallelSelf]

There is something to be said for newsletters from people who have been covering the same area for years. They often spot patterns that get missed by breaking news sites.

A journalist who has followed chips for a decade will notice when a company is making a genuine leap versus just putting out a shiny presentation. The flashy headline usually comes first, the useful information arrives later.

[Henry10]

My test is simple: does the article teach me something or just make me feel like I learned something? Those are very different things.

A lot of tech articles are basically rewritten press releases with a few extra sentences added. The better ones explain why something matters, what the limitations are and who actually benefits.

[IronSpectre88]

I have become much more selective after seeing how many AI stories were exaggerated. Some headlines made it sound like a product was replacing entire industries overnight, then the details showed it was a small feature improvement.

Not saying the technology is not impressive, but context matters. A measured article is usually more valuable than a dramatic one.

[NeutrinoX54]

The old habit of reading the comments is surprisingly useful sometimes. Not because every comment is correct, but because technical readers often point out missing details.

Obviously that can also go badly because the internet loves a confident person with a wrong answer . Still, when several knowledgeable people raise the same concern, it is worth looking into.

[Coastal Otter]

For hardware news, I like sources that actually test things rather than just list specifications. A laptop with a slightly faster processor might sound great until you discover the battery life is terrible.

Real-world testing is where a lot of the marketing gets separated from reality. Numbers on a sheet only tell part of the story.

[BlackPanther34]

The difficult part is that even good outlets can have weak areas. A site might be excellent for programming coverage but less impressive when talking about consumer products or business news.

Specialisation helps. A person who spends their day analysing cloud infrastructure is probably going to provide more useful information than a general reporter covering everything from phones to gaming.

[ElPresidente]

One thing that improved my news diet was slowing down. Instead of chasing every breaking notification, waiting a few hours often reveals which stories actually matter.

The internet rewards speed, but understanding usually takes longer. The first version of a story is often the least complete one.

[RogueAI56]

Some of the most reliable information comes from the people building things, but it needs a little caution. Engineers and researchers can provide fantastic insight, yet they may also have a narrow view of the bigger picture.

The sweet spot is technical expertise combined with independent reporting. That combination is much harder to find, but it is worth looking for.
