Vodafone shares surged nearly 13% after French telecom billionaire Xavier Niel agreed to buy Emirates Telecommunications Group's entire 16.2% stake in the company for roughly 5.9 billion dollars. The deal makes Niel, through his investment vehicle Vega, the largest single shareholder in the British telecom giant, replacing e& as Vodafone's biggest backer

The price tag works out to about 112.5 pence per share including the upcoming dividend, a sizable premium over Thursday's closing price of 97.76 pence. Niel built his fortune founding French telecom and tech company Iliad, and this purchase gives him meaningful footholds in two of Europe's largest markets, the UK and Germany, all at once

Vodafone has spent the past few years in a fairly unglamorous restructuring phase, selling off its Italian operations and merging its UK business with Three to chase cost savings. That kind of slow grinding cleanup rarely excites the market on its own, so having one of Europe's most experienced telecom investors pay a real premium to get in is being read as a genuine vote of confidence rather than just financial engineering

The transaction still needs regulatory approval and is not expected to close until the end of the year, so nothing changes immediately for existing shareholders. But Niel has already said he intends to engage directly with the UK government about the investment, which suggests he is planning to be a hands on shareholder rather than a passive one
