The site sits about an hour northwest of Houston, next to the Gibbons Creek Reservoir, which once cooled a coal plant that shut down back in 2018 and will now supply water to the fab instead, Elon Musk described the facility as the largest and most valuable building on Earth by far, with plans calling for more than 100 million square feet of manufacturing space and at least 3,000 jobs for people in Grimes and nearby Brazos County, Texas Governor Greg Abbott confirmed the jobs and space figures publicly

The core logic behind this genuinely enormous bet is vertical integration, Terafab will handle chip design, fabrication, memory production, advanced packaging and testing all under one roof rather than spreading those steps across the external suppliers and foundries that virtually every major tech company currently depends on, the stated goal is producing processors for Teslas Optimus robots and Cybercab robotaxis alongside high power chips to run SpaceXs orbital data centers, SpaceX says its own current and projected compute needs alone could eventually exceed one terawatt of power, far beyond what current global chip production capacity can supply

Intel is contributing to the project too, having agreed earlier this year to help refactor silicon fab technology for Terafab, though the chipmaker has stayed fairly cagey about the exact scope of its involvement, this builds on a smaller research fabrication facility Tesla began constructing back in April at the north campus of its Giga Texas plant near Austin, which is meant to serve as a testing ground for manufacturing processes before theyre deployed at the much larger Grimes County scale

Vertical integration makes total sense strategically given how exposed every major tech company currently is to the same handful of global chip suppliers and foundries, but building an entire fab from scratch is a genuinely different order of difficulty than just designing chips

3,000 jobs sounds like a lot until you consider the 100 million square feet and tens of billions in investment, modern semiconductor fabs are extremely capital intensive but comparatively lean on headcount once theyre actually up and running

Intel staying cagey about its exact role is worth watching closely, their own foundry business has struggled for years, so their involvement here could either be a genuine turnaround story or another example of overpromising on a partnership that underdelivers

Years of sustained investment before this can meet its targets is the honest caveat that should temper a lot of the excitement here, chip fabs notoriously take much longer to ramp to full production than initial announcements suggest, TSMC and Intels own fabs are good examples of that timeline reality
