Samsung's Unpacked event revealed new foldables and going all in on agentic AI

Samsung's Unpacked 2026 event in London centered on new foldable phones, the Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra and a redesigned Z Fold 8 that reshapes the closed device from a tall rectangle into something closer to a 4:3 ratio, addressing the awkward square screen problem that left black bars around most video content on previous Fold models. A new Flex Titanium technology replaces the folding screen's polymer layers with a titanium alloy film specifically to reduce the visible crease line that has affected every generation of Samsung foldable so far. The Fold 8 Ultra starts at $2,099 and the Fold 8 at $1,899, both arriving August 7, with the more affordable Flip 8 staying at $1,199

The bigger strategic story was Samsung formally retiring its Bixby assistant in favor of agentic AI features built on Google's Gemini, with One UI 9 now described internally as an AI OS layer running across the entire Galaxy ecosystem. Google's SVP for Platform and Devices, Rick Osterlog, described Gemini's new capabilities as letting users snap a photo of an item and ask Gemini to buy a similar budget friendly version, book travel, or navigate more than 40 different apps behind the scenes while a user simply reviews and confirms details afterward. Every new Fold and Flip device ships with six months of Google AI Pro included

Qualcomm CEO Cristiano Amon framed the three way partnership between Samsung, Google and Qualcomm as personal devices becoming endpoints for autonomous agents rather than pure interfaces, but the reporter present at the event noted the crowd's applause for the hardware announcements was noticeably stronger than for the AI declarations. Apple, by contrast, is taking a more cautious public approach to folding Gemini into a revamped Siri, and the piece closes by noting that privacy, agent guardrails, and how personally identifiable information gets shared behind the scenes between apps remain untested questions the public has not yet had to reckon with at scale

The scattered applause for the AI announcements compared to the hardware reveals is a telling detail, suggests actual consumers are a lot more excited about titanium screens than agentic shopping assistants right now

Retiring Bixby entirely in favor of Gemini is a significant admission that Samsung's own AI assistant never really caught on the way Google's has

The Fold 8's reshaping to a 4:3 ratio addressing the black bars problem is such a practical, overdue fix, that square screen issue has bugged foldable owners since the concept launched

Letting an agent handle app navigation while you just review and confirm afterward is exactly the kind of feature that sounds great in a keynote and nerve wracking the first time you actually let it make a purchase

Titanium replacing polymer for the folding screen crease is an interesting materials engineering story buried under the flashier AI headlines

[Puma37]

$2,099 for the top Fold model is a real price to swallow even by premium foldable standards, curious how sales actually track against last year's model at this price point

Apple's more cautious public approach to AI features looks smarter every time one of these more aggressive competitor rollouts runs into an actual controversy

[LurkerPrime]

Six months of free Google AI Pro bundled into every device is a smart way to get people actually trying the agentic features rather than leaving them undiscovered in a settings menu

[Vulture50]

The privacy and guardrails questions being flagged as untested at scale is the most important line in this whole piece, that's a real unknown being pushed onto millions of consumers essentially as a live experiment

This is a good example of a company betting its whole strategic narrative on something the audience in the room didn't seem nearly as excited about as the hardware sitting right next to it
