New evidence for room temperature quantum coherence in brain microtubules is reviving the quantum consciousness debate

[Grim Tracey]

For nearly thirty years, the Orchestrated Objective Reduction theory proposed by physicist Roger Penrose and anesthesiologist Stuart Hameroff argued that consciousness doesn't just emerge from neurons firing across synapses, it arises from quantum computations happening inside microtubules, the tiny hollow tubular structures that form a neuron's internal skeleton. The theory was mocked and largely dismissed by mainstream neuroscience for one simple reason, quantum states are notoriously fragile, and in a warm, noisy environment like the brain, coherent quantum states should collapse almost instantly, long before they could do anything useful for cognition

A study published in Neuroscience of Consciousness by Michael Wiest at Wellesley College reviews recent experimental evidence that complicates that dismissal. Researchers extracted microtubules from mammalian brain tissue and, using Raman spectroscopy, found evidence consistent with quantum coherence persisting inside them even at room temperature, a key prediction of the Orch OR model that critics had long assumed was physically impossible to sustain in biological conditions

The connection to anesthesia is what gives the theory its most testable edge. Inhalational anesthetics are known to bind at hydrophobic pockets across a variety of brain proteins, and there's now experimental evidence specifically identifying microtubules as a functional target of these anesthetics, exactly the structures Orch OR predicts should be involved if a quantum process is what anesthesia is actually switching off when it induces unconsciousness

Wiest's paper also tries to address the theory's biggest philosophical weak spot, if consciousness is just a byproduct of quantum collapse happening alongside ordinary brain activity, it seems to have no actual causal power, meaning evolution would have no reason to have produced it in the first place, a problem philosophers call epiphenomenalism. He argues the quantum framework can address this in a way a purely classical, computational picture of the brain cannot, since Orch OR treats consciousness as arising from a fundamentally non-algorithmic process rather than one that could in principle be replicated by ordinary information processing alone

None of this proves Orch OR correct, and plenty of physicists remain skeptical for good reason, a separate underground experiment beneath Italy's Gran Sasso mountain, testing gravity related wavefunction collapse specifically, already found one simplified version of the theory highly implausible, though the researchers involved noted more complex collapse models still leave room for the idea to survive. What's changed is that a theory once treated as fringe pseudoscience now has actual experimental results, not just philosophical argument, forcing at least some mainstream researchers to take a second, more careful look

[Myles95]

The anesthesia connection is what actually makes this feel like real testable science rather than pure philosophy, you've got an actual physical intervention that's supposed to specifically target the mechanism the theory predicts

[Foundry42]

Room temperature quantum coherence surviving in a warm noisy biological environment is the part that would genuinely surprise a lot of physicists if it holds up under further scrutiny, that's exactly what critics said should be impossible

[ThreadNecro98]

The epiphenomenalism problem is such an underrated philosophical issue, if consciousness does nothing, evolution has no reason to have produced it, that's a real puzzle any theory of consciousness eventually has to answer

[Sequence]

Good that this includes the Gran Sasso underground experiment finding the simplest version of the theory implausible, keeps this from reading like one sided advocacy for Orch OR

[Connor75]

Thirty years of being dismissed as fringe and now getting actual experimental results is an interesting arc for a scientific theory, worth remembering ideas can sit in the wilderness a long time before evidence catches up either way

[Millie82]

This is exactly the kind of claim that needs a lot more independent replication before treating it as settled, one Raman spectroscopy study is a start, not a conclusion

[Hitman04]

The key question is whether the reported coherence is actually functionally relevant or just a physical curiosity. Biological systems can exhibit quantum effects without those effects scaling up to cognition.

Microtubules are everywhere in cells, not just neurons, so any claim tying them specifically to consciousness needs a strong mechanism.

That gap has always been where Orch-OR struggled.

Still, if coherence at body temperature is reproducible, that alone is worth paying attention to.

It chips away at one of the main objections.

[BanterQueen]

Thirty years ago the biggest criticism was decoherence times being far too short in warm, wet environments.

If new experiments are showing longer-lived coherence, that is a meaningful shift.

But replication is everything here.

One or two intriguing results do not overturn decades of skepticism.

This needs multiple independent labs confirming it before the tone really changes.

[ProperWolf]

There is a tendency to jump from "quantum effects observed" straight to "quantum consciousness confirmed."

That leap is enormous.

Even if microtubules support coherent states, linking that to subjective experience is another layer entirely.

Feels like two separate problems being merged into one narrative

Still fascinating, just easy to overstate.

[Plateau70]

What intrigues me is the computational angle. If microtubules can maintain coherent states, could they be doing something beyond classical information processing?

Not necessarily quantum computing in the sci-fi sense, but maybe something hybrid.

That would open up a very different model of how brains process information.

Still speculative, but interesting

[Debbie]

Neuroscience has done pretty well explaining cognition without invoking quantum mechanics.

Synaptic plasticity, network dynamics, predictive processing models... all of that works.

So any quantum theory has to explain something those models cannot.

Otherwise it is adding complexity without necessity.

That is a high bar.

[Jonathan94]

If this line of research continues, it might influence fields beyond neuroscience.

For example, bio-inspired computing or new materials that mimic these structures.

Even if consciousness is not explained, the underlying physics could still be useful.

That is often how these things play out.

[SpinState52]

The term "room temperature quantum coherence" alone is enough to grab attention

That has implications far beyond biology if validated.

Quantum tech has been chasing that for years in engineered systems.

Seeing hints of it in nature would be both exciting and humbling.

[HarleyQuinn32]

Part of the skepticism also comes from how Orch-OR mixes testable physics with harder-to-test philosophical claims.

The physics side can be probed experimentally.

The consciousness side is much fuzzier.

That mismatch makes the whole theory harder to evaluate cleanly.

It invites both overenthusiasm and dismissal.

[Bayley_US]

There is also a philosophical pull to these ideas. People like the notion that consciousness is tied to deep physics.

It feels more profound than emergent neural activity.

That does not make it true, but it explains the enduring interest.

The narrative appeal is strong

[Beth3.0]

One practical issue is measurement. Detecting quantum coherence in biological structures is extremely tricky.

Noise, interference, experimental artifacts... all can mislead.

So even "positive" results need careful interpretation.

The signal-to-noise problem here is brutal.

That is why skepticism persists.

[CMPunk96]

Even if this does not validate the full theory, it might still refine our understanding of cellular structures.

Microtubules could turn out to be more dynamically complex than previously thought.

That alone would be a meaningful contribution.

Sometimes the side discoveries end up being the real breakthroughs

[Dylan70]

The history here is almost as interesting as the science. A theory gets labeled fringe, mostly ignored, then decades later new tools revisit it.

Sometimes it collapses completely.

Sometimes it comes back in a revised form.

Science is slower and messier than people think

This might be one of those cycles.

[HollywoodHogan]

Penrose always framed this as a bridge between physics and consciousness, not just a neuroscience tweak.

That is part of why it has been so controversial.

It challenges both fields at once.

If even a small part of it holds, it forces a rethink of assumptions on both sides.

That alone makes it worth revisiting.
