Cricket loses its greatest all-rounder as Sir Garry Sobers dies aged 89 and out

[Orca]

Sir Garfield Sobers, widely regarded as the finest all-rounder the sport has ever produced, has died at his home in Barbados at the age of 89. Cricket West Indies confirmed his passing on Friday, posting a photograph captioned Legend, Icon, Hero alongside the message a great innings has come to an end, in our hearts, now and forever, Sir Garfield Sobers

Born in Bridgetown on July 28, 1936, Sobers made his Test debut at just 17 and went on to play 93 Tests between 1954 and 1974, scoring 8,032 runs at an average of 57.78 while taking 235 wickets bowling left arm pace, orthodox spin and wrist spin interchangeably, a versatility Don Bradman once called being a five in one cricketer. He captained West Indies in 39 Tests between 1965 and 1972, helping lay the foundation for the Caribbean side's dominant run through the late 1970s and 1980s

His signature achievement came at 21, when he broke Len Hutton's world record for the highest individual Test score with 365 not out against Pakistan at Sabina Park in 1958, a record that stood until Brian Lara broke it with 375 in 1994, with Sobers on hand to celebrate the moment. A decade after that innings he became the first player ever to hit six sixes in a single over in first class cricket, facing Glamorgan's Malcolm Nash while playing county cricket for Nottinghamshire, a feat only equalled once since

In Wisden's 1999 poll ranking the five greatest cricketers of the 20th century, Sobers received 90 votes behind only Bradman's 100, and Bradman himself later called him simply the greatest cricketer of all time. Former England batter Geoffrey Boycott offered one of the more evocative tributes, describing Sobers walking out to bat like a panther with a purposeful, loping and confident walk that let the opposition know he was there for business without needing to say a word. Cricket West Indies president Kishore Shallow called him the greatest cricketer the world has ever seen, offering condolences to his family and the people of Barbados as tributes poured in from across the cricketing world

The Boycott quote about him walking out to bat like a panther, no ego, no words needed, is such a perfect description of genuine sporting presence

[Wendy5]

Being on hand to celebrate Lara breaking his own record in 1994 says everything about the class of the man, not every legend handles being surpassed with that kind of grace

[Dragon]

8032 runs and 235 wickets in the same career is a stat line that still looks completely absurd by modern standards, true five in one cricketer as Bradman put it

[QuietObserver]

The six sixes in an over off Malcolm Nash was so far ahead of its time that it took until 1985 for anyone else to even match it in first class cricket

[Jess30]

Bradman calling him the greatest cricketer of all time is about as high a compliment as the sport has ever produced, coming from the only man usually ranked above him

[Sandra_29]

Making his Test debut at 17 and still playing until 1974 is a career spanning two full decades at the very top, remarkable longevity on top of the raw talent

[Phil95]

Rest in peace to a genuine giant of the sport, tributes from every corner of the cricketing world says everything about how universally respected he actually was

That Bradman quote always stuck with me. When the guy everyone calls the greatest says someone else is better, you kind of stop arguing and just nod.

Sobers doing literally everything at elite level still feels unreal. Batting genius, could bowl pace and spin, and a top fielder too. There's a reason people still use him as the benchmark.

Six sixes in an over in 1968 and people still talk about it like it happened yesterday. That alone would make most careers legendary, and it's just one line on his résumé.

Different era, sure, but greatness like that translates across time. Sad news but what a life in cricket.

[DigitalNomad76]

Every time the "greatest all-rounder" debate comes up, someone tries to bring in modern stats, but Sobers always ends up back at the top.

It's not just numbers, it's the versatility. Seam, spin, batting anywhere in the order... basically a one-man team on his day.

[Marnie80]

Kind of wild how casually older fans talk about him, like "yeah he could do everything" as if that's normal.

Imagine a player today opening the batting, then bowling both fast and left-arm spin depending on the situation. Coaches would have a meltdown trying to categorize him

[Jacob_64]

There's something nice about a player being universally respected across generations.

No endless "GOAT" arguments, no tribal debates, just general agreement that he was special

Cricket doesn't always get that kind of consensus.

[Cesaro27]

Stories from people who saw him live are always the best part. The way they describe timing and ease makes it sound like he was playing a different game.

Highlights don't fully capture that kind of presence, but you can still see flashes of it.

[RVD17]

End of an era kind of news. Players like that become part of the sport's mythology over time.

At least his legacy is locked in. Records, stories, and that Bradman endorsement will keep his name around for a long time.

[RightAbout]

Not a huge cricket historian, but even I knew the name. That usually says a lot about impact.

Feels like one of those figures who transcends the sport a bit, like you hear about them even if you're only loosely following.

[Hitman04]

Respectfully, different eras make it hard to compare. Fitness, schedules, opposition depth, all completely different now.

But even with that said, Sobers seems to pass every "would he still be great today" test people throw at him.

That's probably the best compliment you can give.
