Darts has produced two names above all others when the greatest of all time conversation comes up, and the gap in raw trophy count between them remains one of the most one sided statistical arguments in professional sport. Phil Taylor, known throughout his career simply as The Power, won a combined 16 World Championship titles across his career, 14 of them in the PDC era after the sport's split from the BDO, a level of sustained dominance across close to two full decades that effectively defined an entire generation's understanding of what elite darts actually looked like.

Michael van Gerwen, by contrast, has won three PDC World Championship titles, in 2014, 2017 and 2019, alongside a genuinely enormous haul of other major PDC titles across his career including multiple Premier League and World Matchplay victories, and for a long stretch was widely regarded as producing a higher average standard of consistent scoring and finishing than even Taylor managed during large parts of his own reign at the top of the sport.

The argument for Taylor essentially rests on the sheer weight of that World Championship total being genuinely unmatched and unlikely to ever be seriously challenged again given how much deeper and more competitive the modern PDC field has become. The argument for van Gerwen leans more on the idea that he has been forced to sustain his own excellence against a far larger, more consistently high quality pool of rivals than Taylor faced during large stretches of his own reign. Which one actually deserves the greatest of all time title in this sport?

Darts fans genuinely disagree on this one more than most other sports because the eras are so different in terms of who else was actually competing at the top level, which makes a clean statistical comparison harder than it looks at first glance.
Somewhere between inspired and overwhelmed

Taylor's longevity at the very top across basically two full decades is the part of his case that gets undersold a bit. Staying at genuine world number one level for that long in any sport, let alone one as mentally demanding as darts, is an extraordinary achievement on its own.
Measure twice, post once

16 World Championships is just an absurd number that is genuinely unlikely to ever be touched again given how deep the modern field has become. Taylor wins this one purely on that total alone regardless of any argument about strength of opposition.

Van Gerwen having to compete against a much deeper and more consistently high level field throughout his career actually makes his three World titles feel more hard fought in a way than some of Taylor's wins during the thinner years of the early PDC era.

Three World titles for van Gerwen against Taylor's 16 is not really close enough to be a genuine debate for me if trophies are the primary measure being used here, whatever the arguments about depth of field might otherwise suggest.

Van Gerwen's peak scoring and finishing numbers during his own prime years were genuinely higher than a lot of Taylor's own peak numbers on paper, which at least suggests the ceiling for pure skill might actually sit with MVG even if the trophy count clearly does not.

I think Taylor built the sport's entire commercial and competitive foundation during his reign in a way that makes comparing raw stats alone a bit unfair to how much harder van Gerwen's era actually is to dominate by comparison
