Build American AI, a nonprofit advocacy group backed by the pro-AI super PAC Leading the Future, launched a multimillion-dollar ad campaign on September 1st aimed at shifting public opinion on data centers ahead of the November midterms. The initial campaign targets Kansas, Ohio and Wisconsin, three states where data center concerns have become significant issues in local and statewide races, and the group also announced it's forming a political organization to support state and federal candidates directly through the election

Leading the Future counts venture capital firm Andreessen Horowitz, OpenAI co-founder Greg Brockman and Palantir co-founder Joe Lonsdale among its backers, and the nonprofit reportedly has roughly 50 million dollars on hand for advertising, grassroots engagement, research and public education. The group frames its effort as promoting responsible, transparent policies for data center growth with strong protections and real accountability, arguing the country can't let its loudest and most extreme voices dictate the future of AI infrastructure

The ad push comes against a backdrop of genuinely bipartisan opposition, with polling showing 61 percent of US adults opposed to data centers being built near them as of August, and more than 75 projects worth roughly 130 billion dollars delayed or blocked earlier this year. A CNN review found the negative ads driving that backlash overwhelmingly outnumber pro-industry spending, and interestingly, most industry funded ads don't even mention AI or data centers directly in their actual broadcast spots. Curious what people think about billionaire backed advocacy groups stepping directly into local and state races specifically to shape opinion on an issue this locally felt

The detail that most pro-industry ads avoid mentioning AI or data centers at all in their actual broadcast spots is honestly the most revealing part of this whole story, suggests even the industry's own strategists think the direct message doesn't poll well

$50 million is a real war chest for what's fundamentally a set of local and state level fights, that kind of national money flooding into races over one specific facility could genuinely swamp local grassroots opposition financially
