AI chip startup Etched doubles its valuation to 21 billion dollars in under a month

Inference chip startup Etched announced this week that it raised another seven hundred million dollars at a twenty one billion dollar valuation, led by Jane Street after the trading firm tested the company's hardware and decided to become both a customer and a lead investor in the same round. The number itself is the headline, but the path to get there is the more interesting part of the story. Etched was valued at five billion dollars in December, then jumped to ten point three billion in a three hundred million dollar Series C round in July, and now sits at twenty one billion just weeks later.

The company was originally founded on the idea of building chips optimized for a single specific AI model architecture, which sounded clever until it became obvious that model architectures keep changing every few months and nobody wants to bet a chip design cycle on one particular transformer variant staying dominant. Etched has since pivoted toward what it calls frontier inference clusters, full systems built to run any frontier model rather than being locked to one. That shift from narrow bet to general purpose infrastructure seems to be a big part of what convinced this latest round of investors.

What makes Jane Street's involvement unusual is the sequence of events. This is not a fund writing a check based purely on a pitch deck and a thesis about the future of AI infrastructure. Jane Street tested the actual hardware, bought a rack, deployed it in their own data center running real latency sensitive trading workloads, and then decided to lead the funding round afterward. That is a meaningfully different signal than most AI infrastructure rounds where the enthusiasm is mostly speculative.

On the technical side, Etched says its architecture splits the inference problem into two custom pieces, a low voltage prefill chip for analyzing the incoming prompt and a separate memory and interconnect design for the decode stage where the response actually gets generated. The company claims this lets it pack more transistors per chip without the usual overheating tradeoffs that come with pushing voltage down. Co founder Robert Wachen has described the goal as connecting many chips to a shared memory pool with low latency, which if it delivers on the promise would mean real gains in speed and cost per query at scale.

Etched has also reportedly been pulling in experienced engineers from Nvidia, which is a notable signal given how dominant Nvidia remains in this space and how hard it usually is to lure senior chip talent away from the market leader. The company says it has already secured over a billion dollars in customer contracts across public and private AI firms and cloud providers, though as always with private company numbers there is no independent verification available

Going from prototype off a TSMC line to over a billion dollars in signed contracts in under a year is an extraordinarily fast ramp for hardware, and hardware has a way of hiding its problems until you're deep into a production run. Ask anyone who's shipped silicon at scale how often the second batch reveals issues the first batch didn't.

The prefill and decode split they're describing is a genuinely sound architectural idea on paper, separating those two computational phases makes sense given how different their resource profiles are. Whether the execution matches the theory is the only question that actually matters though. Plenty of good ideas on paper have died in the fabrication process.
