Keyboard shortcuts are one of the easiest ways to speed up everyday computer use. Many people know the basics, like copy, paste and undo, but there are dozens of others that can save hours over a year. Once you learn a good shortcut, it quickly becomes muscle memory. Going back to using the mouse for the same job feels painfully slow

Some of the most useful shortcuts are not well known. On Windows, the Windows key and V opens clipboard history, so you can paste things you copied earlier. Windows key, Shift and S takes a screenshot of part of the screen. In most browsers, Ctrl, Shift and T reopens a tab you closed by mistake, which has saved me more times than I can count. Mac users have their own equivalents, like Command and Space for Spotlight search

My favourite is Ctrl and Backspace, which deletes a whole word at a time instead of a single letter. It sounds tiny, but when you are typing all day, it adds up. I also use Windows key and L to lock my computer whenever I step away from my desk. At work, that one is almost compulsory

Please share your favourites, and mention which operating system or program they work in. Shortcuts for specific software, like spreadsheets, photo editors or code editors, are welcome too. The more obscure, the better

Which keyboard shortcuts save you the most time? And which one do you wish you had learned years ago?
Some call it obsession, I call it fine tuning
