Hardware decision I keep going back and forth on.

Real answers from people here are usually more useful than search results.

I suspect the answer is more nuanced than it first looks, which is why I wanted to ask people who have been there.

Would be interested to hear what people here think

ArVeeDee

Completely agree with that. The switching bonuses are usually the best bang for almost zero effort.

I will keep an eye on it

Yeah can't really argue with that. Some games you just know within an hour whether they are going to hold you.

Let me know what you think
Measure twice, post once

MrRicardo

From what I saw that checks out. There is usually a quieter more important story sitting just behind the obvious headline.

Worth keeping an eye on. :)

WaveFunction34

I tried that and hit a problem at the second stage. Measure twice and all that, but also factor in that it always takes longer than you think.

I am not sure that is always the case. Good to hear other people's experience

Been reading the same thing from a few different angles. The incentive structures in media mean certain angles get more coverage than they deserve.

I will update this thread if anything significant changes
Still figuring it all out

DarkEnergy27

That is the sensible approach. Worth a look if you have not already. :D

Static Estuary

That is the sensible route. Should be fine if you take your time
git commit -m "fixed everything"

Rough Reece

Not sure about that bit tbh. Still playing it tbh

I have seen that go wrong in practice. The key is not to change too many things at once or you will not know what actually fixed it.

Happy to help further if you get stuck

Honestly, I think the safest used hardware is anything passive.

If it doesn't generate heat or store data, there's not much that can go wrong with it

Hot take: keyboards are peak used hardware.

People either love or hate their keyboard, so there are tons of barely-used ones floating around

Brittle Ronan

Sound cards and niche PCIe cards are almost always safe used buys.

They're not usually stressed components, so failure rates are pretty low

Quanta

PSUs are a hard no for me when used.

You're basically trusting someone's word that a device responsible for not frying your entire system is still healthy. That's a gamble I don't enjoy

RayOfLight32

Honestly the best strategy is mixing used and new.

Buy used for low-risk parts, new for anything that could take your whole system down with it

Courier53

WiFi cards are another underrated used buy.

They're simple, cheap, and either connect or they don't. Not much in-between

RAM is basically the safest used component in my opinion.

As long as it's tested and matches your motherboard, there's not much that goes wrong with it over time
Have you tried turning it off and on again?

ShawnMichaels99

Fans are the ultimate "buy used without thinking" component.

Even if they're a bit noisy, you can usually clean and lubricate them back into decent shape

Arty Scout

GPUs are probably the safest bet to buy used, assuming you know what you're looking for.

They either work or they don't, and most failures show up quickly. Plus miners dumping cards means you can sometimes get decent deals if you're careful
ISA maxed. Costs minimised.

Jason99

I'd say CPUs are the most underrated used purchase.

They either work perfectly or not at all, and they don't really "wear out" in the same way GPUs do under constant load

Kai_37

Hard drives are the one thing I would never buy used.

You don't know how long they've been spinning or what kind of stress they've been through. When they fail, they fail dramatically and take your data with them

CollapseState

I actually think motherboards are the riskiest used purchase.

Too many tiny components that can degrade or get damaged, and diagnosing subtle faults later is a nightmare

Dom66

Monitors are a great used buy if you inspect them properly.

Dead pixels and backlight issues are usually visible immediately, so you know what you're getting into

Lewis_43

Cases are almost always worth buying used.

It's just metal and plastic most of the time. Worst case you clean it and maybe replace a fan or two

Baz

I think cooling fans and air coolers are solid used purchases.

Worst case you replace the bearings, but usually they just keep spinning like nothing happened

GPUs used to be a no-go, but after the mining eras, the market is weirdly full of bargains.

Just need to test temps and check for artifacts before committing
Just here for the craic :)

Dean95

Storage SSDs are a maybe for me.

If it has low write hours and you can verify health stats, it's fine. Otherwise I'd rather just pay a bit more for peace of mind

SerialScroller

I once bought a used GPU that looked perfect but had been cooked in a poorly ventilated mining rig.

It worked for a week, then started sounding like a jet engine. Lesson learned

I wouldn't touch used laptops unless you really know the seller.

Too many integrated components that could have hidden issues, and repairs can be a nightmare

Raven

I think people overestimate risk on used CPUs.

As long as there are no bent pins and it boots, it's usually fine for years

Used liquid cooling systems are a gamble though.

Pumps have wear, seals degrade, and you don't really want to discover a leak after installation

KeyboardWarrior47

RGB controllers and accessories are peak "safe used but also unnecessary" territory.

You can buy them second hand for pennies because people upgrade aesthetics constantly
Somewhere between inspired and overwhelmed

GhostRider41

I'd avoid used power delivery components entirely.

Anything that regulates voltage under load is just not worth the stress of wondering if it's secretly dying

NinaVrina

Used enterprise hardware is a whole different category.

It's often built like a tank, but runs loud enough to make you question your life choices
VAR can do one

WildManSteve40

If I had to pick one category, I'd say GPUs are the most worth buying used overall.

High supply, easy testing, and clear performance metrics make them the best risk-to-reward tradeoff in most cases
Real till I die.
