What's the best budget mechanical keyboard you've actually used, not just heard hyped up

[MiniElliot]

The budget mechanical keyboard space has genuinely matured a lot, a few years ago cheap mechanical keyboards meant scratchy stock switches and mushy stabilizers, but hot swappable PCBs have become standard even at low price points, meaning you can start with an inexpensive board and upgrade the switches and keycaps later rather than being locked into whatever came in the box

The general community consensus for anyone starting out points toward boards in the 40 to 80 dollar range with hot swap sockets, gasket mounted plates for a softer, less harsh typing feel than older tray mount designs, and switches that are at minimum lubed from the factory even if not premium, since unlubed stock switches are still the single biggest quality gap between a good budget board and a mediocre one at a similar price

The honest starting advice for anyone new to the hobby, don't overthink the first purchase, get a hot swap board in that price range with a reputation for decent stabilizers out of the box, since stabilizers matter more to overall feel than the switches themselves and are also the hardest thing to fix after the fact without real modding effort. Switches and keycaps are the cheap, easy part to swap out once you know what you actually like, spend your research time on stabilizer quality and build quality instead of chasing the specific switch everyone online happens to be hyping this month

Hot swap sockets being basically standard now even at budget prices is such a genuine quality of life improvement, being able to try different switches without soldering anything removed the biggest barrier to entry this hobby used to have

[Jenny75]

Can't agree more on stabilizers mattering more than switches for a first purchase, I chased a specific hyped switch for my first board and the mediocre stock stabilizers were what actually bothered me every single day of typing

[Glenn83]

This is solid advice, spend the research time on the stuff that's actually hard to fix later, stabilizers and build quality, rather than the switches everyone obsesses over first since those are trivially easy to swap

Went with a cheap hot swap board specifically to test whether I even liked mechanical keyboards before spending real money, ended up loving it and eventually upgraded switches, exactly the entry path this hobby needed

[Katie71]

Gasket mount at a budget price point felt like a luxury feature a few years ago and now it's just expected, the whole hobby has trickled down in a good way

[Amber Tiger]

The trickle down of gasket mounting and hot swap PCBs to budget boards over the past couple years has been one of the best developments in consumer tech that most people outside the hobby have never even heard about

[Patrick_82]

My advice to anyone starting out, don't buy switches based on a single hyped YouTube video, go try a few different types in person if you can, or at least watch multiple comparison videos since everyone's tactile sensitivity differs

Keycaps are the cheapest and most satisfying first upgrade once you have a board you like the feel of, a full keycap set completely changes the look and sound for relatively little money

[Forge37]

The lubed from factory detail is underrated, an unlubed budget board sounds and feels noticeably scratchier than one that got even basic factory lube, worth specifically checking for in reviews before buying

[Octopus40]

Worth mentioning foam mods too for anyone who gets a board that types fine but sounds hollow or pingy, a cheap piece of foam inside the case transforms the acoustic profile for very little effort
