That is pretty much what I found too. The thing that actually helped me was checking what changed just before the problem started.

Using something like MediaMonkey or Foobar instead of iTunes makes a big difference, especially on older machines where iTunes feels heavy.

Drag and drop plus proper library control just feels simpler
