Is it actually bad to let your phone battery hit 0% regularly?

[Janette_63]

Always been told not to let your phone die completely, is that still true or was that only ever relevant for old battery types?

[Sequence]

Modern phones use lithium-ion batteries, which genuinely do degrade faster when regularly drained to 0 percent or kept at 100 percent for long stretches, the ideal range for long term battery health is generally considered to be somewhere between 20 and 80 percent

Occasionally hitting 0 percent isn't going to ruin your battery overnight, the damage comes from making it a consistent daily habit rather than an occasional accident

Many modern phones also have built in protections now, some will stop charging past a certain point automatically if plugged in overnight, and some throttle performance at very low battery specifically to protect the cell from a damaging deep discharge

[LuckySentinel]

The 20 to 80 percent range advice always felt excessive for daily use, but knowing regular 0 percent drains specifically cause faster degradation makes it worth actually paying attention to

[Southern Joanne]

Good to know occasional accidents aren't a big deal, was worried every time I forgot to charge overnight

[Sentinel38]

This is why some phones now have an optimized charging feature that learns your schedule and slows down charging overnight, exactly for this reason

[Kieron]

Modern phones use lithium-ion batteries, which really don't like being fully drained. Hitting 0% occasionally isn't catastrophic, but doing it regularly does add extra stress and can speed up long-term degradation.

The chemistry just handles partial cycles better than full ones, so smaller top-ups are actually healthier than deep drains.

[Drift Vector]

That "20 to 80 percent" advice is more of an ideal than a strict rule. It's what minimizes wear, but it's not practical for most people.

Realistically, just avoiding frequent drops to 0% and not leaving it at 100% for hours on end will get you most of the benefit.

[Quiet Hermit]

One thing people forget is calibration. Letting your phone hit 0% once in a while can help the system recalibrate the battery percentage reading.

That's more about accuracy than battery health though.

Doing it every month or two is fine, doing it every day is where problems start

[Emma29]

Heat matters just as much as charge level. A phone sitting at 0% isn't great, but a phone sitting at 100% while hot is arguably worse.

Gaming while charging or leaving it in the sun does more damage than the occasional full drain.

[Nomad]

A practical way to think about it is convenience vs longevity. If running to 0% fits your routine, your battery will still last a couple of years without major issues.

If you want to squeeze out maximum lifespan, then yeah, avoid it where you can.

Most people fall somewhere in the middle

[Slate Router]

There's also software protection built in now. Phones usually shut down before the battery truly hits absolute zero to prevent damage

So when you see 0%, it's not actually fully empty

Still, treating that as a safety buffer rather than a target is the better approach
