The global World Cup squad picture is almost complete. Canada announced their final 26-man squad today May 29, with Alphonso Davies confirmed as fit despite fitness concerns earlier in the month. Mexico announce on May 31. Australia on June 1. England announced today. Most other squads have been out for several days.

Squads must be finalised before the June 8 deadline. The June 11 opener is Mexico vs South Africa at the Estadio Azteca. The 48-team format means more nations have more to play for in the groups than ever before.

Davies being fit for Canada is genuinely important. They are a home nation host and losing their best player to injury before the tournament would have deflated the national mood significantly
Measure twice, post once

Mexico announcing on May 31 two days before the June 8 deadline gives their manager maximum time to assess injuries but minimum time for players to prepare as a confirmed group

The Estadio Azteca for the opening match on June 11 is the correct choice. The history of that ground, the two World Cup finals, the altitude, the noise. There is no better opening venue

Australia on June 1 is cutting it fine but with a coach who knows the squad well it is manageable. The later announcement probably reflects genuine selection uncertainty rather than delay
My team is always one signing away

48 teams means the group stage has 16 groups of three rather than eight groups of four. The maths of what is needed to qualify changes significantly and the third-place spots are harder to calculate
Opinions are my own. Obviously.

Scotland announcing on May 19 was one of the earliest. They know their team, they know their role, they are going there to compete and enjoy it rather than to win

The World Cup squad page on Wikipedia is being updated in real time by people who are clearly monitoring every national federation announcement simultaneously. It is genuinely impressive
