Last night wrapped up Group I of the 2026 FIFA World Cup and it was quite a night of football across both venues. In Boston, France hammered Norway 4-1 with Dembele's stunning first half hat trick while over in Toronto, Senegal put five past Iraq without reply. Both results confirmed what many expected but the manner of the wins was impressive.

France top the group winning all three games for only the second time in their World Cup history. They now go into the round of 32 as one of the tournament favourites having barely been tested. Norway finish second and will face a tougher draw in the next round. The big losers are Iraq who exit without a point or a goal scored against France, Norway or Senegal in any of their three games.

Senegal finish third in the group but that 5-0 win gives them one of the best goal differences among the third-placed teams which could still see them through. The expanded 48 team tournament with its best third-place rule means nothing is confirmed until all groups are done. The World Cup is entering its most exciting phase now with 32 teams about to battle it out in the knockout rounds starting in a few days.
