School sport is a mixed memory for many people. For some, PE lessons were the best part of the week, full of football, athletics and the joy of being outside. For others, they were a weekly ordeal of cold mud, communal showers and being picked last for teams. Most of us loved at least one sport and hated at least one other

Cross country seems to top many people's lists of hated school sports, especially when it took place in January in shorts and a thin T-shirt. Rugby in the rain, hockey on frozen pitches and swimming in a freezing school pool also come up often. Then there are the gymnastics lessons, with vaulting horses, climbing ropes and the dreaded forward roll in front of the whole class

For me, it was cross country. Our course ran through a muddy field, up a steep hill and past a farm with a very loud dog. The PE teacher followed in a car, shouting encouragement through the window. I usually finished somewhere near the back, covered in mud and convinced I would never run again. Funnily enough, I took up running in my thirties and now enjoy it

Many people say school sport put them off exercise for years, while others discovered a lifelong passion. Things have changed a lot in some schools, with more choice and a greater focus on enjoyment. But plenty of adults still shudder at the memory of a whistle and a muddy field

Which sport did you play at school and hate? And did you ever come around to it later?
