What's the most one-sided rivalry in your sport, and does the underdog have any real hope?

[Slay40]

Every sport has at least one rivalry where, despite the label, the actual results have been overwhelmingly lopsided for years or even decades, one side keeps showing up as the favorite regardless of form, and the so called rivalry starts to feel more like a formality than a genuine contest

What makes these interesting to actually discuss isn't just naming the imbalance, it's digging into why it persists, sometimes it's genuine talent disparity, sometimes it's a structural or financial gap that's hard to close, and sometimes it's something more psychological, a team or player who's simply gotten inside the other side's head to the point where the result feels decided before it starts

Curious what everyone's pick is here across any sport, and specifically whether you think there's genuine hope of the underdog side actually closing the gap anytime soon, or whether this is one of those rivalries that's just settled for the foreseeable future regardless of what either side does differently

Any conversation about one sided rivalries in football has to mention how dominant certain historic derby results have swung for years at a time, momentum in these things really does seem to compound on itself once it starts

[Sentinel68]

In tennis, certain head to head records between specific rivals have been so lopsided for so long that pundits stop even calling it a rivalry and just call it a pattern instead

[BitSus]

Boxing has some brutal examples of this, certain fighters just seem to have another fighter's number regardless of how the styles should theoretically match up on paper

[NightOwl]

The psychological angle is the part that fascinates me most, once a team or player believes they can't win against a specific opponent, that belief becomes its own kind of self fulfilling problem regardless of actual talent gap

[Reward Annie]

Financial disparity explains a lot of the more lopsided modern rivalries specifically, when one side can simply outspend the other on talent year after year, the on field imbalance eventually stops being surprising at all

[Socket91]

This is a fun debate because it forces you to separate the emotional intensity of a rivalry from the actual cold, hard results, plenty of the most passionate rivalries are also among the most lopsided on paper

[Merchant27]

The structural gap ones feel the hardest to actually close, talent and form can shift year to year but a real resource or infrastructure disparity tends to persist regardless of how motivated the underdog side actually is

[Kev4]

My honest take is most of these gaps eventually narrow given enough time, very few dominance streaks in sports history have actually lasted forever without at least one serious challenge eventually breaking through

[Merchant94]

Genuinely think some of these gaps do close eventually though, sports history is full of examples of a supposedly permanent imbalance flipping completely once a new generation of players or a change in leadership shakes things up

[Henry75]

Interesting how often the underdog side in these rivalries actually plays better tactically or with more heart, and still loses anyway purely because the gap in overall quality is just too significant to overcome on effort alone
