Does money ruin top level sport or is it just part of it now?

The difference at the top level is usually marginal and gets overstated.

I suspect the answer is more nuanced than it first looks, which is why I wanted to ask people who have been there.

Money has always been part of top level sport, the difference now is the scale. A player earning a fortune does not automatically damage the game, especially if that money is linked to huge audiences and commercial success.

The bigger issue is when financial power removes competition. If only a handful of teams can realistically win every year, that is when fans start losing interest.

The argument depends on the sport. In some ways money has improved things by bringing better facilities, better coaching and more professional athletes.

At the same time, watching smaller clubs struggle while richer teams collect all the best talent can be frustrating.

Balance is the key, not pretending money can somehow be removed from modern sport.
