Norris beats Antonelli to claim final Dutch GP win at Zandvoort

Lando Norris won a chaotic Dutch Grand Prix on Sunday, the final scheduled race at Zandvoort under the current calendar arrangement, in a race that got red flagged on the opening lap after Max Verstappen crashed hard into the wall. Verstappen reported he was fine after the impact, but losing the home favorite that early completely changed the complexion of the afternoon for the sellout Orange Army crowd.

Norris actually lost the lead at the second start to Mercedes driver Kimi Antonelli, who made a strong restart and pulled away initially. The two then settled into a longer strategic battle, with Norris eventually finding a way back past Antonelli on track with 18 laps to go and going on to win by 11.5 seconds once he had clear air.

Antonelli's own path back to the podium wasn't straightforward either. He pitted for a third time under a late virtual safety car and had to fight his way back ahead of his own teammate George Russell, who chose to stay out on older tyres rather than stop again. Russell was then told over team radio to let Antonelli through in the closing laps, handing back the podium position he had gained the day before, and he sounded audibly frustrated about the call afterward.

Norris's second consecutive win closes his championship gap to Antonelli, though the margin is still substantial given how dominant Mercedes has been for most of the season. With this being the last Dutch Grand Prix under the venue's current deal, it was a fitting send off for a circuit that's produced some properly dramatic afternoons since it returned to the calendar

Verstappen crashing out on the opening lap of his home race, on what might be the final Dutch GP for a while, is such a brutal way for this venue's current run to end. Zandvoort deserved a cleaner farewell than that

The strategic battle between Norris and Antonelli is the part that made this race properly entertaining rather than just another Mercedes procession. McLaren clearly had the pace to make the two stop work, and Norris timing that pass with 18 laps left instead of forcing it earlier showed some real patience. Compare that to some of his early career races where he'd have tried the move five laps too soon. Good sign for the second half of the season if he can keep making these kinds of calls
