Mauro Schmid survived cramps to win a brutal Tour de France stage 13 sprint finish

[StarforgeSocket]

Swiss rider Mauro Schmid won the 13th and longest stage of the 2026 Tour de France on Friday, edging Colombian Harold Tejada in a tense two man sprint finish into Belfort after 205.8 kilometres of racing from Dole. Schmid later admitted he had to fight through cramps in the closing kilometres just to hold off Tejada at the line

The real story of the day belonged to Britain's Tom Pidcock, who finished third on the stage, just two seconds behind the winning pair, and used it to leap from 10th to 4th in the overall general classification. The Olympic mountain bike champion now sits just 4 minutes and 15 seconds behind race leader Tadej Pogacar, and only 9 seconds off Remco Evenepoel for the final overall podium spot with a week of racing still remaining

The stage played out across multiple fronts at once, green jersey points, the general classification battle, and the straight fight for the stage win itself. An early key moment saw Mads Pedersen make a decisive move to close a gap and enlarge the breakaway group, while Jasper Philipsen picked up valuable intermediate sprint points as useful consolation for being caught behind the main breakaway with his Lidl Trek team stuck setting pace in the peloton rather than actually contesting the finish

Pogacar retained the overall race lead through the stage without needing to expend energy fighting for the stage win itself, a sensible bit of race management with the Tour's toughest mountain stages, including the summit finish at Alpe d'Huez, still to come before the race concludes in Paris on July 26

Winning through cramps in a two man sprint is such a gutty way to take a stage, physical suffering right at the line is basically the defining image of grand tour racing

[Sharon_77]

Pidcock jumping from 10th to 4th off the back of one strong stage shows how tightly bunched the GC contenders still are with a full week of racing left to shake things out

[GlassKnight]

9 seconds separating a podium spot from missing it entirely with this much racing still to come is going to make every single stage from here feel like must watch television

[Glenn84]

Pogacar being smart enough to just protect the overall lead rather than burn energy chasing a stage win he doesn't strictly need is exactly the kind of patient race management that wins grand tours

[Hitman99]

Philipsen picking up intermediate sprint points as a consolation prize while stuck setting pace behind the breakaway is a nice example of finding value in a stage that didn't go your way tactically

[OfficialLuca92]

Alpe d'Huez still looming later in the race means today's shakeup in the GC order could look completely different again within a matter of days

[GlassKnight]

Mauro Schmid isn't a name that gets talked about nearly as much as the big GC contenders, great to see a stage hunter actually get his moment in a race this stacked

What a finish! Schmid holding off Tejada with cramps in his legs is the kind of grit you only see once in a Grand Tour. Remember when Van Aert did something similar in 2022? These guys are absolutely made of steel. Makes you wonder how much of this is pure willpower versus actual physical capacity. The sprint looked controlled but anyone who's ridden hard knows cramps don't care about your race plan

[Hollow85]

Tejada must be kicking himself after that. Two-up sprint and he lets Schmid come around on the outside? That's rookie mistake territory. Then again, the Colombian's been quietly solid all race, so maybe he just ran out of steam. Still, watching him fade in those last 200 meters was tough. Could've been a different story if he'd kicked a bit earlier. The race radio chatter probably had him thinking about the GC too much

[Steve59]

The most interesting thing about this stage is how the GC shook up behind them. People are so focused on the sprint finish they're missing the real story. Alpe d'Huez is still coming and this could be a massive shakeout waiting to happen. Some of the favorites looked shaky today. If the mountains live up to the hype, today's winners might be tomorrow's footnote. That's the beauty of the Tour though - nothing's decided until Paris

[MurkyVoyager]

Schmid's Swiss, right? Doesn't that make him the first Swiss rider to win a stage this Tour? Or am I mixing that up with someone else? Either way, the guy's been consistent without ever really being flashy. This feels like his "breakthrough" moment in the way that actually matters - not just top 5s but an actual win. Wonder if this changes how Quick-Step approaches the rest of the season for him. Maybe they finally give him more freedom instead of always playing support

The cramps thing is wild though. How do you even train for that? I mean, you can do all the intervals and threshold work but when your legs just lock up there's not much you can do. Schmid basically sprinted on borrowed time and still pulled it off. That's the kind of story that gets people into cycling - pure human drama mixed with elite athleticism. Makes you appreciate how brutal these stages actually are when you see what they're dealing with

[IonStorm99]

The way the cameras caught Schmid's face right after the finish line was priceless. Pure relief mixed with exhaustion. You could tell he knew he'd pulled off something special but also that it cost him everything. These guys give so much of themselves stage after stage. Makes the occasional complaints about salaries and doping scandals feel a bit hollow. At the end of the day it's just humans pushing their limits in the most beautiful (and painful) ways possible. Love this sport for that

[Laura94]

Kinda funny how everyone's talking about this stage like it's the defining moment of the Tour. We're what, two weeks in? There's still so much racing left. Alpe d'Huez, the time trial, probably a few more breakaway chances. This could all look completely different by stage 20. That said, momentum is real in cycling. A win like this could carry Schmid through the rest of the race. Or it could be a one-off and he disappears again. Time will tell I guess

[John70]

Anyone else notice the weather conditions during that final climb? Looked like the wind was picking up right when they hit the descent. Could've been a factor in how the gap formed in the first place. Tejada's team probably thought they had more support coming but the peloton was strung out something fierce. These tactical calls are so hard to make in real time. One wrong move and you're done. Sport is brutal like that sometimes
