All three World Cup co-hosts are out, quarterfinals just wrapped, what a tournament

[RomanReigns26]

The 2026 World Cup has produced one of the more brutal storylines I can remember for host nations, and the quarterfinals this week only cemented it. Canada, Mexico and the United States are the three co-hosts of this tournament, and all three are now eliminated, Canada knocked out by Morocco, Mexico beaten by England, and the USMNT eliminated by Belgium. Hosting the tournament clearly bought none of the three sides an easier path through the bracket

The quarterfinals themselves delivered genuine quality on the pitch regardless of who was playing. On Thursday France beat Morocco two nil to reach the semifinal, with Kylian Mbappe scoring his eighth goal of the tournament in the process, which is a serious individual tally at this stage of a World Cup. On Friday Spain edged past Belgium two one in a match that swung on a Fabian Ruiz goal before Belgium equalised through Charles De Ketelaere, with Spain eventually finding a way through

Today brings the final two quarterfinals, Norway against England in Miami and Argentina against Switzerland in Kansas City, and both feel genuinely open on paper rather than clear favourites walking through. England eliminating a co-host in Mexico during the round of sixteen suggests they are playing with real confidence right now, while Norway have quietly been one of the tournament's more efficient sides without attracting the same attention as the bigger traditional names

What strikes me most about the bracket shaping up is how it completely inverts the usual home tournament narrative. Hosting is normally framed as a structural advantage, friendly crowds, no travel fatigue, familiar conditions, and yet none of that translated into results for any of the three co-hosts this time. I think that is worth remembering the next time someone confidently claims home advantage guarantees anything in a knockout format specifically, since group stage form and squad depth clearly mattered far more here

The semifinal picture is now nearly complete, with France facing Spain on Tuesday and the Norway or England winner facing the Argentina or Switzerland winner on Wednesday. That sets up a fascinating spread of possible finals, from a heavyweight France versus Argentina rematch of styles to something genuinely unexpected if Norway keeps their run going

I want actual predictions rather than just reactions to what already happened, because the tournament is genuinely wide open from here. Who do you think wins the France versus Spain match specifically, and is anyone actually backing Norway to cause a real upset today rather than just admiring their run so far?

[Cole_55]

The co-host elimination story is honestly the headline of this entire tournament for me, more than any single individual performance. Three nations spent years building infrastructure and hype around home advantage, and all three got knocked out before the semifinal, which I think says something real about how overstated home advantage actually is in a single elimination format specifically

Group stage form and squad depth clearly mattered more than crowd support or travel logistics this time, and I would be curious whether this specific tournament becomes a reference point the next time someone confidently claims hosting guarantees a deep run. This result argues pretty strongly against that assumption

[Mason0]

Mbappe's eight goals through the quarterfinal stage is a serious tally and deserves more discussion than it is getting relative to the co-host story. That is approaching the kind of individual tournament that gets remembered for decades regardless of how far France ultimately go from here

My prediction for France versus Spain is France, mostly because Mbappe in this kind of form tends to find a way to matter in the biggest moments specifically. Spain's route through Belgium showed some defensive vulnerability, and a player scoring at this rate should be able to exploit given even a couple of clear chances

[Jordan_68]

I am backing Norway today and I want to actually defend that pick rather than just admire their run from a distance. They have been efficient rather than flashy through the tournament so far, which is exactly the profile of team that tends to cause a genuine upset against a bigger name still riding confidence from a single standout result like England's win over a host nation

England eliminating Mexico is impressive on paper, but I think there is a real risk of overconfidence creeping in after that specific result. Norway playing as the underdog with nothing to lose is a classic recipe for exactly the kind of upset that gets remembered long after the group stage form is forgotten

[Always_Craig96]

Genuine question for people who have actually watched more of Belgium and Argentina than I managed to catch, because I only saw highlights of most of the tournament so far rather than full matches. Is Argentina versus Switzerland actually as close as it looks on paper, or is Argentina expected to comfortably handle a side that has generally been solid rather than spectacular through this tournament

I ask because Argentina winning a title with this current squad would be a massive story given how the roster has evolved. And I want a more informed read before I lock in a prediction of my own

[Panther]

On that question, Switzerland have genuinely been the tournament's most underrated side in my honest opinion, tight defensively and disciplined without ever looking flashy enough to draw much neutral attention. Argentina are clear favourites on paper and I would still back them to win, but I do not think this is the comfortable walkover some of the pre tournament seeding might have implied to casual viewers

If Switzerland can keep the match tight and low scoring into the second half, they have shown throughout the tournament that they are genuinely capable of frustrating a technically superior side into mistakes. Is exactly the kind of match that can turn on one moment either way

[Gaz_82]

I want to push back slightly on the framing that this tournament disproves home advantage broadly, rather than specifically for these three particular squads this specific time. Sample size in a single World Cup is genuinely tiny, and three host nations getting eliminated in one tournament could easily be squad quality coincidentally lining up unfavourably this specific cycle rather than a real structural signal about hosting itself

I would want to see this pattern repeat across a couple more World Cup cycles before concluding hosting genuinely does not matter in knockout football specifically. Rather than treating one admittedly dramatic tournament as decisive proof of a much bigger claim about the format generally

[BackRowBob]

Fair pushback above, and I will take the other side of that specific argument properly. My honest prediction for France versus Spain is actually Spain, mostly because a settled possession based system tends to cope better with an in form individual attacker than a team relying on quick transitions, and Spain have shown they can grind out a result even when not playing their most fluent football, which is exactly what beating Belgium required them to do

Mbappe scoring eight goals is spectacular, but a well drilled defensive setup executed with real discipline can still frustrate one brilliant individual performer across ninety minutes. And I think Spain have the tactical structure to specifically attempt exactly that approach

[Wardlow86]

My honest read on the whole tournament, stepping back from any single prediction, is that this has been one of the more genuinely unpredictable World Cups in recent memory, and I mean that as a real compliment rather than just a neutral observation. Co-hosts eliminated early, a Norway side quietly overperforming without much hype, and a semifinal draw that could plausibly produce almost any final matchup depending on how today goes

That unpredictability is exactly what makes a tournament genuinely memorable. It beats another predictable coronation for whichever squad walked in as the pre tournament favourite before a ball was even kicked

[Morpheus49]

The host nations all bowing out early is a plot twist nobody wrote into the script. Canada, Mexico, USA - all gone by the quarter-finals. The stadiums in Toronto, Mexico City, and LA are now hosting matches with no home fans to create that electric atmosphere. It's like throwing a party and the hosts leave before the main course.

[George94]

The flip side is that the quarter-finals have felt more like a proper neutral-site tournament. No home advantage, no crowd pressure - just pure football. Spain, France, Brazil, Morocco - any of these could lift it. The unpredictability is kind of refreshing, even if it's a shame for the host nations.

[BosonSpark]

What's funny is how the cities have adapted. Toronto's still got fans in red everywhere, even though Canada's out. Mexico City's turned into a global fan zone with supporters from every remaining nation. And LA's just treating it like a festival at this point. The football might be serious, but the vibe's still celebratory.

[OfficialLuca92]

Three hosts, three exits, zero drama about "home advantage" dominating the narrative. It's almost poetic in a brutal kind of way. The cities are still packed with fans, just now they're all neutrals with flags from everywhere. Mexico City's bars are still full, Toronto's still celebrating what was, and LA's still... well, LA-ing.

[Midnight Aoife]

The brutal part is how close each host came to making it work. Canada had that group stage spark, Mexico looked solid until England's counters picked them apart, and the USA... well, Argentina in a knockout game is just a different beast. But the tournament's moved on, and now it's anyone's game.

[Ronaldo]

Losing all three hosts by the quarter-finals is rare, but it's made this World Cup feel like a true open tournament. No one's getting a free pass. The cities have absorbed the hits and kept the party going. Now it's just about who can handle the pressure with no home crowd behind them. That's a different kind of test, and it's making for some fascinating matches.

[Amber84]

Toronto's still buzzing from Canada's run, even if it ended against Morocco. The city went full red-and-white for weeks, and even though they're out, the vibe's been incredible. Mexico City felt the sting of the England loss, but the fans there are too passionate to let it kill the mood. And LA? Well, LA's still got celebrities showing up to every match, so the atmosphere's intact regardless.
