Short story: The Gift

[Mark7]

She had wrapped it in three layers because one felt careless.

Inside: a photograph from 1987. Her mother standing in a garden that no longer existed, holding a cat whose name nobody could remember. Smiling in the way people smile when they do not know anyone is watching.

She had found it in a shoebox under a bed in a house that was being cleared.

Her mother opened the paper slowly, the way she always had. Then she held it for a long time without saying anything.

'I was happy then,' she said eventually.

Neither of them said anything after that. But they stayed at the table for another hour

[CMPunk02]

The detail of wrapping it in three layers because one felt careless is quietly devastating before anything else has happened

[Holly]

The cat whose name nobody could remember destroyed me a little. Loss inside loss inside loss

[Ryan84]

The photograph from 1987 in a house being cleared is so much backstory in so few words. You understand everything that is not said

[DotEXE]

That final image of staying at the table for another hour without words is the whole story. Presence as the only thing that matters

[Compiled Wolf]

She was happy then. Four words that carry decades. Beautiful and heartbreaking
