Endings that change everything: the finale that saved a flawed story or ruined a great one

[GradientPiston]

An ending is the one part of a story that reaches back and rewrites everything before it, so let us talk about the powerful ones. The finale that redeemed a flawed film or series and made the whole journey worth it in hindsight, and the far crueller opposite, the ending that retroactively ruined something you had loved for hours or years

The redemption category is the rarer and more precious one, the last ten minutes that recontextualise a messy middle, the final image that lands so perfectly it forgives every flaw, the payoff that makes you want to go straight back to the start and watch it all again with new eyes

The ruination category is where the passion runs hottest, because a bad ending is a special betrayal, you invested time and love and the story spent it badly at the final hurdle, and there is a specific grief in a great thing that fumbles its last moments and taints the memory of everything good that came before

So bring both, spoiler tagged for anything recent, the ending that saved the story and the one that ruined it, and the debate underneath, whether an ending really should have the power to retroactively rewrite a whole experience or whether the good hours count regardless of how it wrapped up

[Harper84]

Firm believer that a bad ending cannot retroactively ruin the good hours, I had the good hours, they happened, a fumbled finale is a bad last chapter not a time machine that deletes the joy I already felt

[SlowSocket]

Completely disagree, the ending is the lens you remember the whole thing through, a betrayal at the end poisons the rewatch because now you know it was all building to nothing, it absolutely reaches back

[DataProphet]

The finale that saved it category, a messy series stuck a landing so perfectly that the flaws reframed as deliberate and I went straight back to the start, the ending taught me how to watch the beginning

[Batista]

That is the magic of the great ones, they are a key that unlocks the whole thing retroactively, suddenly the confusing middle was the point all along, chills

[TealBear]

A bad ending is a special grief because unlike a bad film you actually cared, the betrayal is proportional to the investment, nobody rages about the ending of something they were indifferent to

[ECWAlfie47]

The good hours count regardless camp is protecting itself from disappointment and I understand it, but I cannot rewatch a thing whose ending gutted me, the knowledge sits over every scene now

[GhostRider]

There is a difference between an ending that is sad or bold and one that is a betrayal, plenty of endings people call ruinous were just brave and unpopular, the fumble is when it breaks its own logic not when it hurts

[Joanne94]

That distinction matters, a downbeat ending that is earned is not a bad ending, we conflate did not give me what I wanted with did it badly and they are not the same thing at all

[EventHorizon]

The one that saved it for me was a slow film I nearly quit whose final scene reframed the entire thing as something else entirely, best last two minutes I have seen, worth every slow hour before

[Inference Scott]

Whole debate comes down to whether you experience stories in the moment or in memory, the in the moment people keep the good hours, the in memory people lose them to a bad ending, and most of us are secretly both
