Craft exercise: write one scene twice, once making us love a character and once making us fear them

A proper craft challenge this month. Take a single simple scene, a person making breakfast, waiting at a bus stop, tidying a room, and write it TWICE using the same basic actions, but in the first version make the reader warm to the character and in the second make the reader uneasy about them, with no change to the plot, only the craft

The point of the exercise is to prove how much of character lives in the tiny choices rather than the events, the same man buttering the same toast is tender or menacing depending entirely on word choice, rhythm, what the narration notices and what it withholds, and doing both back to back teaches that lesson faster than any amount of theory

The tips from running this before, the shift is rarely in what happens and almost always in the verbs, the details selected, and the pacing, warmth tends to notice softness and vulnerability while unease notices precision, control and the slightly too still, and the exact same gesture can carry either depending on how it is framed

So post both versions, keep each short, and tell us which was harder to write because that answer is always revealing, and the bonus round for the confident, write a third version that starts warm and turns uneasy within the same short scene, which is the hardest and most useful skill of the three

Attempting this and the discovery is immediate, the warm version and the uneasy version have identical actions and completely different VERBS, he sets the cup down versus he places the cup down, one word and the whole temperature shifts

The verb carrying the entire mood is the lesson nobody believes until they do this exercise, places versus sets versus puts down are three different men doing the same thing, chilling how small the lever is

Found the uneasy version far easier to write which worried me about myself, menace flows and warmth feels like work, apparently my instrument is naturally tuned to dread and I am now examining my life

Opposite here, warmth came easily and I could not make the same scene sinister without changing what happened, which taught me my unease relies on plot crutches while my warmth is pure craft, useful and humbling

The what the narration notices point is the real key, warmth looks at the wilting flower he waters, unease looks at how precisely he lines up the cutlery, same room, the camera chooses the character

Third version attempted, warm turning uneasy mid scene, and it is brutally hard because the turn has to be invisible, one detail too many and the reader feels the writer's hand, the pivot must feel like their own dawning realisation

What strikes me doing this is how little the reader needs, three well chosen details and the mood is set, we overwrite unease with adjectives when precision and rhythm do it invisibly and better
