Not looking for a definitive answer, more a sense of what people have actually found worthwhile.

The best advice usually starts with it depends, which is frustrating but honest.

Started writing short fiction again after a long break and forgot how difficult it is to make something small feel complete.

A novel can hide behind a lot of pages, but a short story has nowhere to escape. Every sentence has to earn its place.

Basically the literary version of trying to pack a suitcase and discovering the suitcase has opinions.

Short fiction is great because it encourages experimentation.

A strange idea that might feel too risky for a full novel can work perfectly in five or ten pages.

Some of my favourite stories are the ones that leave a little space for the reader to fill in the gaps.

Sometimes the missing details create more atmosphere than a full explanation would.

A character mentioning an old photograph can say more than three paragraphs explaining their entire family history.

Been working on flash fiction lately and it is a completely different challenge.

Trying to create a beginning, middle and ending in a few hundred words feels almost impossible at first.

Then you cut half of it and somehow the story gets better. Writers are basically professional word removers.

Characters have a habit of ignoring the author's plans. Very rude behaviour from people who technically do not exist. \

Writing dialogue in short stories is my biggest struggle.

Every line has to do multiple jobs: reveal character, move the story and sound natural.

Meanwhile real conversations are mostly people saying they forgot why they walked into a room.

Have a folder full of unfinished stories that I keep promising to return to.

At this point the folder has become less of a writing tool and more of a museum of abandoned ideas. \

Still, every now and then one comes back with a better direction.
