QC Ware and IonQ announced a hybrid quantum classical chemistry workflow on September 1st that calculated electrostatic interaction energy for a modeled enzyme active site within 0.5 kcal per mole of classical benchmarks, clearing the 1 kcal per mole threshold generally considered chemically accurate for enzyme modeling. The workflow combined GPU accelerated preprocessing through QC Ware's Promethium platform with quantum measurements run on IonQ's Forte trapped ion system, accessed through Amazon Braket

The demonstration modeled the heme active site of cytochrome P450nor, an enzyme belonging to the same broader family responsible for most human drug metabolism, using a 115 atom active site model mapped onto an eight qubit quantum active space. IonQ Chief Business Officer Scott Millard said more accurate metabolic data could help drug discovery teams confidently rank candidates and catch toxicity risks earlier, calling it real quantum impact on real health outcomes

QC Ware co-founder Kin-Joe Sham noted this builds on an earlier demonstration using different quantum hardware, showing Promethium's hybrid approach isn't tied to one specific type of quantum computer. Curious what people think about hardware agnostic hybrid workflows like this as a near term strategy compared to waiting for any single quantum platform to definitively pull ahead

Landing within the 1 kcal per mole chemical accuracy threshold is a genuinely meaningful benchmark to clear, not just an incremental improvement, since that's the actual bar drug discovery teams need for results to be practically useful
