Physicists at the Institute of Science and Technology Austria have experimentally confirmed a theoretical prediction first made two decades ago, demonstrating a fully autonomous way to entangle two physically separated qubits without any active control or repeated measurements. Their method uses what they call a quantum bath, a continuous stream of correlated light particles that automatically synchronizes distant qubits by creating a shared ground state between them, reported in Physical Review X

Distributed entanglement, the quantum connection needed to make separate hardware modules behave as one larger machine, has traditionally relied on sending carefully controlled photons between qubits or matching photons each qubit emits, an approach that contributed to the 2022 Nobel Prize in Physics but depends on repeated measurements and post selection, meaning it does not succeed every time. The ISTA team's quantum bath approach instead maintains the entangled state continuously, so it remains available as a resource for computation even beyond the natural lifetime of the qubits themselves

The result is described as a promising but limited prototype, since the autonomous method currently transfers only about 10% of the bath's available entanglement, well below what active control approaches can achieve. Researchers say the original prediction assumed ideal conditions that were difficult to reproduce experimentally, which may explain why confirmation took more than 20 years, and the team believes the approach could eventually be scaled to synchronize multiple distant qubits as part of future fault tolerant quantum systems
