I got to the same conclusion a different way but yes. I would try the least destructive fix first before changing too much at once.

Australia getting attention in quantum computing makes sense, but the hard part is turning strong research into reliable commercial systems. Having talented scientists is one thing, building the manufacturing, supply chains and engineering teams is another.

Still, the country has some impressive groups working on different approaches like silicon-based quantum computing. It is not just about who makes the loudest announcement at a conference, it is about who can solve the boring practical problems :)

The interesting part is that quantum progress probably will not come from one magical machine appearing overnight. It will be years of small improvements in error correction, hardware stability and control systems.

Australia has a good reputation in research, especially with universities and physics groups. The challenge will be keeping that talent local instead of watching everyone move elsewhere for funding.

A lot of people underestimate how difficult quantum computing is. Regular computers got faster because we could keep shrinking components for decades, but quantum systems have a completely different set of problems.

If Australia can contribute solutions to those problems, even without owning the entire industry, that would still be a huge win. Being the place where one important piece is invented can matter a lot.

The comparison with the early internet is interesting. Nobody knew exactly which companies or countries would dominate, but research centres building expertise ended up becoming very valuable later.

The same could happen here. A breakthrough in materials, cooling systems or error correction might look like a small detail until it becomes the thing everyone needs.

Quantum hype does get a bit extreme though. Every few months there is a headline suggesting we are one step away from quantum laptops replacing everything on your desk :D

The reality is probably more boring and more useful. Quantum computers will likely solve specialised problems while normal computers continue doing most everyday tasks.

The biggest question for Australia is investment. Great researchers can only go so far if there is not enough long-term support.

Quantum projects are not quick wins. A government or company has to accept that some experiments will fail before the useful discoveries appear. That patience is usually where things get complicated.
