Microsoft Build ran June 2-3 at Fort Mason in San Francisco. The biggest announcement was Project Polaris, Microsoft's own in-house AI coding model that will replace GPT-4 Turbo as the default model in GitHub Copilot from August 2026. Teams get automatic migration and a three-month fallback period.

Also shipped: Windows Agent Framework open-sourced, giving developers the full agent runtime for Windows-native AI apps. Azure Agent Mesh announced for multi-agent orchestration across cloud and on-device. Copilot Workspace out of beta. Satya Nadella's thesis: Windows is no longer a platform for human users only. Agents are now first-class citizens in the runtime.

Opinions are my own. Obviously.

Project Polaris replacing GPT-4 in Copilot is Microsoft cutting the OpenAI dependency for their most commercially important product. That is a strategic shift that changes the relationship between the two companies

Open-sourcing the Windows Agent Framework is the developer ecosystem play. Make the agent runtime free and open, capture the cloud and enterprise revenue that runs on top of it

Copilot Workspace out of beta means developers can now use autonomous coding agents in production without experimental caveats. That is a meaningful enterprise adoption signal

Windows as an agent platform, not just a human operating system, is the framing that explains why Microsoft does not need Windows 12 right now. The platform story has already changed

The CNBC piece published today noted that Microsoft and Google are taking on Anthropic and OpenAI in AI coding. Project Polaris is Microsoft's answer to Claude Code built from their own model rather than a competitor's

Tracey

Azure Agent Mesh coordinating agents across cloud and on-device is the enterprise orchestration layer that large organisations actually need. Not one agent, but many agents working together under governance
