IonQ opened a 22,000 square foot quantum R&D laboratory in Boulder, Colorado this month, focusing on semiconductor ion trap chip design and testing for next-generation quantum systems. The facility will centralise strategic business units and foster collaboration with local partners including University of Colorado Boulder.

The first quantum computer from the Boulder facility is expected by late 2026. The move to semiconductor ion trap fabrication is significant: it aims to bring the manufacturing precision of semiconductor processes to the challenge of building ion traps at scale, potentially improving consistency and enabling larger systems.
