Bloomberg reported this week that ByteDance is considering capital expenditure of up to 70 billion dollars in 2026, more than doubling from the 20 to 30 billion range estimated for 2025. The spending would cover data centres and AI infrastructure globally as ByteDance attempts to lead the Chinese AI market and challenge US players internationally with Doubao and its other AI applications.

ByteDance spent 50 billion dollars in profit in 2025 meaning the 70 billion capex would essentially reinvest the entire profit into infrastructure. The move puts ByteDance's AI investment in the same conversation as the 725 billion in combined capex from Meta, Amazon, Microsoft, and Alphabet.

Reinvesting 70 billion from 50 billion in profit means ByteDance is spending more on AI infrastructure than it makes. That level of conviction from a profitable private company is the strongest signal possible

The global buildout component is what makes this geopolitically significant. ByteDance building data centre capacity outside China creates AI infrastructure that is not subject to US export controls

Doubao competing with ChatGPT internationally on the back of 70 billion in infrastructure investment is a different competitive threat than anything the US AI industry has faced from China before

The combined US hyperscaler capex at 725 billion and ByteDance at 70 billion is a global AI infrastructure race at a scale that has no historical precedent in any technology sector
ISA maxed. Costs minimised.

China requiring AI experts to seek permission before leaving the country alongside ByteDance doubling capex paints a consistent picture of China treating AI as a national strategic priority at every level

The quantum connection: ByteDance building this infrastructure with classical compute now while quantum is maturing means they will face the same PQC migration challenge as Western hyperscalers but with a different regulatory and governance context
