Bloomberg confirmed this week that ByteDance is considering up to $70B in capital expenditure for 2026, more than double the estimated $20-30B from 2025. ByteDance generated ~$50B in profit in 2025, meaning the capex would exceed the year's profit.

The spending covers data centres and AI infrastructure globally. ByteDance's Doubao is the leading AI assistant in China and the company is attempting to compete internationally. Combined with Meta, Amazon, Microsoft, and Alphabet's combined ~$725B in 2026 capex, the global AI infrastructure buildout is running at a scale with no historical precedent.

Spending more than you earned in a year on infrastructure is a bet that the infrastructure will generate returns that justify the investment. ByteDance's track record on infrastructure bets is strong

A private company with $50B annual profit spending $70B on AI infrastructure is the clearest possible signal that the people with the most information about the sector believe the demand is real

The global build is the strategic piece. ByteDance data centres outside China are not subject to US export controls on chips. The geography of AI compute is a geopolitical asset

$725B from four US companies plus $70B from one Chinese company in a single year is an infrastructure investment at a scale that changes global energy demand, chip supply chains, and property markets in data centre corridors

The quantum connection: all of this classical AI infrastructure will eventually need PQC migration. $70B in infrastructure built in 2026 without PQC planning is $70B that needs to be revisited
