Spotify rolled out a new Running Mode inside its iOS app for Premium subscribers in the US, Canada, the UK, Ireland, Australia, New Zealand and Sweden, tucked into the existing Fitness Hub, and it is built around 25 curated running playlists you can customize by workout type, duration, beats per minute and general mood

The actual selling point is that once you hit play the app is supposed to guide your run rather than just shuffle songs at you, Spotify describes it as seamlessly moving through tracks for a more fluid and motivating soundtrack, which sounds like it is doing some real time pacing work rather than just handing you a static playlist someone made two years ago

There is also an optional voice cue layer in English that chimes in with timely encouragement without talking over your music, Spotify's own framing compares it to a supportive friend running alongside you, which is a nice pitch though the actual test will be whether the cues land at genuinely useful moments or just feel like noise after the first few runs

This did not come out of nowhere either, Spotify says fitness related prompts have consistently been among the most popular uses of its existing Prompted Playlists feature, so this is really Spotify noticing an established behavior pattern and building dedicated tooling around it rather than inventing a new use case from scratch

The narrower rollout list is worth noting too, this is iPhone only for now and limited to seven countries, so if you are Android or outside those regions you are stuck manually building your own running playlist for a while longer, which given how much of Spotify's user base sits outside those markets feels like a fairly conservative initial launch

BPM matching to your actual running cadence would be the real feature here if that's what's happening, curious whether it's using phone sensors to track your pace live or just sorting tracks by a fixed tempo range
Football is life. Everything else is just details.

The seamlessly moves through tracks language is doing a lot of work in that description, sounds like they might be crossfading or beatmatching transitions rather than just hard cutting between songs, that alone would be a nice upgrade for anyone who's had a great playlist ruined by an awkward song change mid stride

iOS only and seven countries is such a Spotify move honestly, always rolling features out to the smaller subset first and taking months to reach everyone else

Brandon80

To be fair that's a pretty standard staged rollout strategy for any app this size, better to catch bugs on a smaller user base before pushing to Android's much more fragmented device ecosystem

The voice cues concept has been tried before by dedicated running apps like Nike Run Club and it's hit or miss depending on execution, curious if Spotify's version actually adds value or just becomes something everyone switches off within a week

PixelTea

Fair, but a wrapper that removes friction still has real value, half the reason people fall out of a running habit is exactly this kind of small setup friction before you even start moving

Dialer75

Running specific playlists already exist all over Spotify made by other users, feels like this is mostly a UI wrapper around behavior people were already doing manually rather than a new capability
