Modern smartphones are packed with features. Every launch event brings a new list of camera modes, AI tools, gestures, buttons and settings, each presented as something that will change how we use our phones. Yet most of us end up using the same handful of apps and features every day. Plenty of clever extras sit untouched for the entire life of the phone

Common examples include voice assistants that some people never speak to, macro camera lenses that produce blurry photos, gesture controls that trigger by accident and digital wellbeing tools that are set up once and then ignored. Some features exist mainly to fill a slide at a launch event. Others are useful for a small group of people and invisible to everyone else

My never used feature is the extra macro lens on my last phone. It was advertised as a highlight, but the photos were so low resolution that the main camera did a better job by cropping. I tried it once to photograph a bee, and the bee came out as a yellow smudge. I never opened it again

There are also features people only discover after years, and then wonder how they lived without. So feel free to mention those too. Hidden settings, clever shortcuts and underrated tools are all welcome

Which phone feature have you never used once? And which one did you discover too late?
Opinions are my own. Obviously superposed.

Animoji. I tried it once to send my sister a talking poo emoji

She was not impressed, and that was the end of it. She still brings it up at family dinners, three years later

The always on display. I switched it off on day one to save battery, and I have never missed it. A quick tap on the screen shows the time anyway. Some people love it, apparently

Discovered too late: the back tap gesture on iPhone. Double tap the back of the phone to take a screenshot or open an app. Years of owning iPhones, and I found it last month

It is in the accessibility settings, which is why nobody finds it. Accessibility menus are full of hidden gems like that

Satellite messaging. Thankfully, I have never needed it

Glad it exists for walkers and climbers, though. A feature you hope never to use is still a good feature

Digital wellbeing. Set it up, saw my screen time, felt ashamed and never looked again. The weekly report notification was the worst part. I turned that off too
