Smart home technology has matured enough that genuinely useful setups are achievable without paying monthly subscription fees to five different companies. The key shift is local processing. Home Assistant running on a small server handles automation without cloud dependency. Zigbee and Z-Wave devices communicate locally without internet. Thread and Matter standards are slowly solving interoperability. The frustration of the previous era was products that worked brilliantly until the company shut down the server or charged a fee. Local processing eliminates that dependency. Building a smart home in 2026 takes more initial setup than buying a branded ecosystem but produces a result you actually own and control.
Question everything. Especially this.
