Some hobbies quietly drain your bank account. It starts with a small purchase, then a better version, then accessories, subscriptions, travel and upgrades. Before long, you realise you have spent a small fortune on something you barely have time for. And then, for one reason or another, you give it up

My example is road cycling. I started with a cheap secondhand bike and ended up with carbon wheels, a power meter, expensive clothing and a turbo trainer for winter. Then I moved house, my routes changed and I slowly stopped riding. The bike now lives in the garage, judging me every time I open the door

Other common culprits seem to be photography, golf, fishing, model railways, gaming, scuba diving, horse riding and flying drones. Some hobbies are expensive from day one, while others creep up on you gradually. Then there are collecting hobbies, which can spiral completely out of control

I am curious how much people spent, what made them stop and whether they have any regrets. Did you sell the gear, keep it in a cupboard just in case or pass it on to someone else? And would you ever go back?. Hindsight makes these purchases even more painful

I'm not always right, but I'm never wrong ;)
