What hobby did you pick up as an adult that genuinely surprised you

[Highland Builder]

Started woodworking about three years ago purely on a whim after watching one YouTube video, and it's turned into the thing I actually look forward to most evenings now, genuinely did not see that coming for myself at all

There's something interesting about the hobbies that sneak up on you as an adult versus the ones you actively went looking for, sometimes the accidental ones end up being the ones that actually stick

Curious what people's genuine surprise hobby has turned out to be, the one you'd never have predicted for yourself even a few years back

[Poppy5]

Started birdwatching during a really boring stretch of remote work and it's become one of my favorite parts of any weekend now, never in a million years would I have predicted that for myself

[ThoughtVector]

Picked up rock climbing at a friend's suggestion purely to be polite and it's become a central part of my identity now, three years in and still completely hooked

[NicholasCleverley]

Started baking bread during a stretch of unemployment purely to fill time and it's turned into a real skill I'm proud of now, still bake weekly even with a full time job

[Louise5]

Got into pottery on a whim after a single group class, now I have an entire shelf of lopsided but beloved bowls and mugs I made myself

[SašaJelenič]

Started gardening in a tiny apartment balcony space and it's become a meditative part of my routine now, never expected to care this much about tomato plants

[Gareth19]

Picked up chess again as an adult after years away from it and got weirdly obsessed, spend way more time than I'd like to admit studying openings now

[Taker04]

Started running purely because a friend needed a partner to train with, hated it for the first month completely, now can't imagine my week without it
