People obsess over gear, technique, and finding the perfect starting point when picking up something new, but the number that actually predicts whether a hobby sticks is simpler than any of that, how many total hours you've actually spent doing it in the first month

Motivation and initial excitement fade fast regardless of how genuinely interesting a hobby is, and the people who stick with something long term are almost always the ones who front-loaded enough raw hours early on to get past the frustrating, genuinely unrewarding beginner phase before their initial enthusiasm ran out naturally

Expensive gear and perfect technique matter far less early on than simply logging real hours, badly, imperfectly, consistently. If you're only tracking one thing when starting something new, track total hours spent rather than progress markers or gear quality. Curious whether people have noticed this pattern in their own hobbies, sticking with the ones they front-loaded time into versus abandoning ones they didn't

This matches my own experience exactly, the hobbies I actually stuck with were ones I threw disproportionate early hours into before motivation naturally faded

Never thought to track hours specifically rather than progress, that reframing actually makes a lot of sense for judging whether something will stick
