Some people throw themselves into one hobby for decades, getting deeper and better every year. Others hop between interests, picking up guitar one season, pottery the next and running after that. I lean towards the second group, which my cupboard full of abandoned equipment can confirm. But I do wonder what I am missing

Specialising has obvious rewards. You get properly good at something, you understand it at a deeper level and you often find a community of people who share the same passion. The risk is burnout, or a hobby turning into an obligation that you feel guilty about skipping

Rotating keeps things fresh and teaches you a little about a lot. Skills from one hobby sometimes carry over into another in surprising ways. Trouble is, you rarely get past the beginner stage, which is where much of the satisfaction lies

Which approach suits you? Has a hobby ever stuck with you for years, or are you a serial dabbler like me?
