Everyone who cooks has at least one catastrophe that outlived the meal itself, the dinner that failed so spectacularly it became a permanent family reference point, retold at every gathering to the eternal groaning of the person responsible, so let us gather the disasters and honour them

All genres of failure welcome, the ambitious recipe that defeated you in front of guests, the substitution that seemed clever and was chemistry's enemy, the timing collapse where six things needed the one oven, the confident ignoring of an instruction that turned out to be load bearing

The best of these have a moral hiding in them, the salt for sugar swap, the trusting of a recipe that lied, the guest with the allergy nobody flagged, and the retelling usually improves with age until the burnt offering becomes a cherished piece of household folklore

So bring your legend, the meal your family will not let you forget, and the lesson if there was one, and the person whose disaster is still being retold at THEM by relatives years later gets the sympathy of the entire board and probably its respect

Confidently served a curry so hot from ignoring the chilli quantities that my father in law wept at a first meeting, twelve years married, still introduced as the one who tried to kill dad

Cheugy89

The one who tried to kill dad is a title you carry with a strange pride by now surely, that is folklore royalty

Salt for sugar in a birthday cake, discovered live at the table by a child's face, the video exists, it is played annually, I have made peace with nothing
Cashback on everything or it didn't happen

MurkyInlet

The child's face is always the moment these disasters cross from tragedy to legend, no adult reaction compares to a betrayed six year old and a savoury cake
Come on you Reds.

Six dishes, one oven, a timing collapse so total that we ate the courses in fully random order over two hours as each thing surrendered, guests were kind, the marriage survived, the oven did not get an apology

Amber90

Load bearing instruction ignored, skipped resting a joint because we were hungry, carved it, watched it deflate into a puddle, learned that some steps are not suggestions the hard way in front of everyone

NealBinnom-Williams

The recipe that lied deserves defending the cook occasionally, some published recipes are simply wrong, undercooked timings and impossible pan sizes, not every disaster is the cook's fault and the retelling never grants that mercy
Currently losing at something

Freddy95

True, I have a grudge against one famous recipe that has ruined the same dish for thousands of us, we are victims of a document, not bad cooks
Football is life. Everything else is just details.

NovaBreaker10

Substituted a key ingredient with the closest looking thing in the cupboard and produced something that technically was food, the family named it after me, the name is not affectionate
Press F to pay respects

Reading these and realising the disasters get retold with more love than the successes ever do, nobody reminisces about the perfect roast, the legend is always the catastrophe, failure is just better story
