Cooling is one of the most debated choices in PC building. Air coolers use heatsinks and fans, while liquid coolers move heat away from the processor through a pump and radiator. Both can keep a modern CPU at safe temperatures, but they come with different trade offs. Builders often have strong opinions about which is better

Air cooling is simple, reliable and usually cheaper. There is no pump to fail and no liquid to leak, and high end air coolers perform very close to many liquid options. The downside is size, as big tower coolers can block RAM slots or not fit in smaller cases. They can also look bulky inside a glass panelled case. Both have improved enormously over the years

All in one liquid coolers have become popular for their clean look and strong performance, especially with hot running processors. Custom water cooling loops are the enthusiast option, with stunning results but plenty of maintenance and risk. Pumps can fail, and some liquid coolers become noisier as they age

I have used air cooling for years, partly because I worry about leaks and partly because it is one less thing to break. But my latest build uses a small case where a liquid cooler made more sense. So far, it has been quiet and reliable

Which do you trust, air or liquid? And have you ever had a cooler fail?
