We are often told that things are not built like they used to be. Phones last a few years, washing machines seem to give up the week the warranty ends and cheap furniture wobbles within months. But most of us own at least one everyday object that refuses to die. It might be decades old and still doing its job without complaint

Gadgets had their own thread a while back, so let's leave phones and computers out of this one. I am thinking of things like kettles, kitchen knives, pans, tools, coats, boots, wallets and furniture. Some of them were expensive and built to last. Others were cheap and have simply outlived every reasonable expectation. A surprising number seem to have been handed down from parents or grandparents

My longest serving item is a cast iron frying pan that belonged to my grandmother. It must be at least fifty years old, and it cooks better than any modern non stick pan I have bought. Every few years I scrub it back and season it again. I fully expect it to outlive me

There is also the question of whether longevity is worth paying for. Buy it for life products are popular again, with some brands offering lifetime guarantees on boots, bags and tools. Others argue that cheap things replaced more often work out about the same in the end

Which everyday object has lasted you the longest? And would you buy the same thing again today?
Coffee first. Questions later.
