Turbulence is simply air moving unpredictably, caused by things like temperature differences, jet streams, mountains disrupting airflow, or thunderstorms. Clear-air turbulence, the kind that catches passengers most off guard, happens in cloudless skies with no visual warning at all, typically near the boundary of a jet stream where wind speeds shift rapidly over a short distance.

What actually makes it feel so alarming is largely a mismatch between sensation and reality. Modern aircraft wings are certified to withstand far more force than any real world turbulence produces, with test wings flexed to roughly 150 percent of their maximum expected load before engineers even consider the design safe, and Boeing has demonstrated a 777 wing flexing more than seven meters upward without breaking during ultimate load testing. According to FAA data, turbulence caused 163 serious injuries on US flights between 2009 and 2022, and the overwhelming majority involved people who weren't wearing their seatbelt.

Some of the newest aircraft, including the Airbus A350 and Boeing 787, use active gust load alleviation systems, sensors mounted on the nose that detect an approaching gust a fraction of a second before impact and automatically adjust the control surfaces to soften the response. Combined with pre-flight weather forecasting and a dedicated FAA turbulence nowcast system updated every 15 minutes, pilots today have considerably more warning and mitigation available than at any point in aviation history.
