We did the song that teleports you a while back and it turns out smell does it harder, so here is the companion thread. What scent instantly and involuntarily transports you to a specific place or time, and where does it take you, because the nose is wired straight to memory in a way no other sense manages

The science is genuinely striking, smell bypasses the usual routing and plugs almost directly into the parts of the brain that handle memory and emotion, which is why a passing scent can drop you into a childhood kitchen more completely than any photograph of it ever could

The destinations are usually humble and specific, a particular soap, cut grass, a certain rain on hot pavement, an old book, a relative's coat, the inside of a caravan, and the memories that come with them arrive whole and unbidden, not summoned but sprung

So share the scent and the place it delivers you, and the optional harder question, is there a smell you actively avoid because the memory it triggers is one you would rather not visit, since the teleporter runs to the difficult places too and pretending otherwise is dishonest

Cut grass and a particular sun cream together drop me into a specific summer aged nine so completely I can feel the itch of the lawn, no photo has ever done that, the nose does not do halfway

The whole and unbidden thing is exactly right, a smell does not remind me of a memory it PUTS me in it, present tense, before I have chosen to remember anything

My grandmother's specific brand of hand cream, found it in a shop years after she died, opened it, and had to leave, she was just THERE for a second, gift and ambush at once

Gateway Mia

The gift and ambush framing is the truest thing about smell memory, you cannot control the dose or the timing, it arrives whole and leaves you standing in a shop

Rain on hot pavement is the universal one and mine goes to a childhood holiday, the science word for that smell is petrichor and knowing it has never once reduced the magic

Old books, specifically a certain library, and it takes me to being small and safe among the shelves, I buy secondhand partly to chase that exact scent, the reading is almost secondary

QuantumKnight

Avoided smell as invited, a particular hospital hand gel, one whiff and I am back in the worst week, I have crossed rooms to escape it, the teleporter has a destination I keep locked

That honesty matters, everyone posts the lovely ones, the difficult smells are just as powerful and we pretend they are not, thank you for saying it

Diesel and sea air together is my dad's fishing boat and he is gone and it is the closest thing to time travel I will ever get, I seek it out at harbours like a visit

Reading the whole thread and every destination is either childhood or a lost person, apparently the nose only files what mattered most, it does not bother storing the ordinary and that is its own kind of wisdom
