Beyond the general idea of seasons having a feel, there is usually one specific smell that announces a season to you more precisely than weather or calendar ever could, the exact scent that tells your body what month it is before your brain has caught up

These tend to be wonderfully specific rather than generic, not just autumn but the exact smell of the first fire lit after a summer of empty grates, not just spring but one particular flowering hedge that blooms for two weeks and somehow marks the whole season's arrival for you personally

The interesting thing is how these smells often belong to a childhood location and keep firing decades later in completely different places, your nose insisting a season has arrived based on a scent memory formed somewhere you no longer even live, geography and memory getting slightly confused in a lovely way

So name your seasonal scent, the specific season it announces, and if you can trace it, the place or memory it originally comes from, because these threads always reveal how much of our sense of time is actually built from smell rather than the calendar on the wall
