A census of digital ghosts that will not rest. Almost everyone is in at least one group chat that has completely outlived its original purpose and yet stubbornly rolls on, the holiday that ended three years ago, the project that finished, the event that happened, still pinging away with memes and life updates between people who never actually meet

The comedy is in the mismatch between the name and the reality, a chat titled after a 2022 trip that is now the primary communication channel for four people, a wedding planning group that survived the wedding and the honeymoon and shows no sign of stopping, a fantasy league chat where nobody mentions fantasy anything

There is something quietly lovely underneath the absurdity though, because these zombie chats are often where real friendships now live, the practical reason was just the excuse to start talking and the talking became the point, the scaffolding fell away and the building stayed up

So confess your longest surviving pointless chat, what it was originally for versus what it does now, and the etiquette question underneath, has anyone ever successfully renamed one of these to reflect reality, or is the ironic outdated name now load bearing and untouchable

A chat named after a stag do from 2021 is now where six of us conduct our entire friendship, the stag do lasted a weekend, the chat has lasted years, the name is permanent and beloved
Have you tried turning it off and on again?

Tel86

The name being permanent and beloved is universal, we tried to rename ours once and there was genuine emotional resistance, the outdated name is an inside joke that renews itself daily

Gaz_60

Wedding planning chat that survived the wedding, the first anniversary and a baby, at this point it is just our family group with a wildly inaccurate title and we would not change it for anything

The scaffolding fell away and the building stayed up is the best description of adult friendship I have read, we needed a reason to talk and then the reason became irrelevant, that is the whole thing

Fantasy football chat where football is now the least discussed topic by a distance, it is memes, life admin and one running joke from 2019 that refuses to die, the league is an afterthought
COYB — you know who you are

Have a work leaving do chat that outlived the person leaving, they left, we stayed, the chat named after their farewell drinks is now our main social hub, they are not even in it anymore

Plateau65

Renamed one successfully exactly once and it felt like a betrayal, everyone kept referring to the old name anyway, the rename was cosmetic, the identity was set in stone years ago
Measure twice, post once

The zombie chat is the last redoubt of the friendships that geography and jobs tried to kill, muted, occasional, and absolutely essential, I would miss it more than chats I use daily

Ours is a house share group from a flat none of us have lived in for five years, still going, still called the flat name, the flat is gone but the flatmates remain, the chat outlived the walls

TheGame_Real

The whole thread proves the practical reason was always a trojan horse for the friendship, the trip, the project, the wedding, all just excuses to start talking, and the talking was the point all along
